Our History

Stephen & Caroline Warren’s Home on West Court Street

Over 125 years ago, at the intersection of Warren St & W. Court St, a remarkable story began. Steven Warren, a formerly enslaved* Union Civil War Veteran, built a house that became the foundation for the birth of a lasting legacy, sending ripples through the currents of history.

Steven Warren's daughter, affectionately known as Aunt "Ollie", married Jack Hopkins, bringing the two families together. In 1890, they purchased the corner lot on Warren Street for $150. This marked the start of Aunt Ollie's thriving boarding house and restaurant, fondly named "Miss Ollie's.” Followed by a stable house & grocer ran by Jack Hopkins

That was just the beginning. Since 1890, Warren Street has witnessed the rise of over 25 successful Black-owned and operated businesses, cementing its position as the esteemed Black Historical Business District of Rocky Mount, VA.
